In 2005 I was going to school to become a network engineer, and took some programming courses along the way. The introduction to object-oriented programming hooked me. I loved the idea of breaking something down into smaller pieces and then recreating each aspect through logic. Taking things apart and learning how they work has always been a strong, core, driving interest of mine and this sang that same song. And so after gaining enough understanding over the language to bumblefuck things together and eventually get them working, I went home and feverishly started working on my first program, Personal Library Manger.

Favorite Self-hosted Services

Over the last few years I’ve been getting more and more into self-hosting. This is the process of running your own cloud-like services yourself, on your own network to gain privacy and control over your data. I feel this is important in this day and age where services are whimsically shut down and users are left with no recourse and every major company is tracking you. When you host it yourself, you control it, no one can shut it down, and no one can track you.

My .bashrc Example File

My .bashrc and .help files. This is not meant to be plug and play, but more of an example. It will require editing depending on your system. For instance the update alias would be distro dependant, the shortcut locations and weather location would be personal, and some scripts and aliases rely on other software to be installed such as fzf and tools like zip/rar/7z.

Click on download to access the raw files for downloading or click on view to see the files with syntax highlighting right on this page. Thank you!

Selfhosting Overview

What is selfhosting?

Self-hosting is installing and managing your own services on a server that you have control over. Think of a few of these popular services that you might be using right now: iCloud, Google Drive, Google Photos, Pinterest, Spotify… those things can all be ran by you.

Why selfhost?

Control: You have the freedom to customize and configure your services according to your own specific needs, and you don't need to worry about services shutting down or changing their policies or pricing.

My Home Backup Solution

If you ever had a hard drive fail without having a backup then you know it can be a painful experience. It happened to me when I was 16, and I lost a hard drive filled with music. But my loss was far from important, it was only music that I had obtained from sailing the high seas. I mean sure, it took a lot of time to acquire during those days, does anyone else remember it taking 20 minutes to download a single song? But it was far from irreplaceable. What happens if it’s your family photos or letters or other things that simply can not be replaced? I learned my lesson that day, backups are important!

Healthchecks for Docker Containers

This is the script I came up with to check on docker containers and notify Healtchecks. See my video on Healthchecks for a brief walkthrough, and the Healthchecks website for documentation and further information.

Update 6/16/22
The Healthchecks developer reached out to me and had some helpful advice on some features I was overlooking. One is that you can append /fail to the ping url and it will instantly notify of the failure instead of waiting for the timer to lapse. And the other was that instead of using the uuid URLS using the slug URLS are easier to keep track of. So with that in mind I have changed my script, but I’ll leave the first version further down below. This version requires the container name and Healthchecks name to match whereas if you manually add each with the separate uuid URL then it would not require this.

My Tasker Scripts

These are the Tasker scripts that I run on my phone. If I add any in the future, I will add them at the top. Tasker is a very powerful application that allows you to run scripts on your phone and automate things. You can get it on the Google Play Store, and find a plethora of scripts here or by searching for them.

Good Morning - Download
3/6/21 Update: Good Morning script has been updated. There may still be issues I’m looking to fix.
9/04/23 Update: Made it a easier to set variables on main project page.
This runs every morning as my alarm. It reads aloud, “Good morning Anthony. It is %time on %dayofweek %date. Current location is %city, %state. %weatherinformation. The sun will set at %sunset.” Also when I have upcoming vacation, I will add that it reads, “There are %numberdays days left until your vacation.” This script has some dependencies on other scripts that I have packaged into a zip. Extract into your main Tasker folder then import the project.

I have a Rockpro64 SBC (single board computer) in this case running OpenMediaVault as my home’s NAS and server for other self-hosted services. I chose this board at the time as it was one of the more powerful SBC’s that is quiet and has low power consumption, and it was specifically built for this. It has a 8TB drive in it for all my storage needs. One thing worth mentioning, using a SBC with an ARM CPU may limit some software availability, but as ARM becomes more popular this will be less of a problem. My other server is a Lenova Thinkcentre M93P which is X86 and quite a bit more powerful… I use this to run some of the more resource intensive services.

4/18/21 Update - For the moment, I no longer use this as it can be done with the client I’ve switched to using (Tivimate). Also worth mentioning, m3ufilter looks to no longer be actively developed… on his github page he recommends using tvheadend. I really like m3ufilter and there may be a time when I need to use it again. For slow hardware running Kodi clients it was the perfect fit.

Some comments mentioned the API had changed, another comment mentioned it was still working for them. I decided to rewrite the code using a different, free API, as suggested per this comment: https://github.com/witnessmenow/arduino-coinmarketcap-api/issues/4#issuecomment-444731941

Air Compressor Bafflebox

I built a baffle box to help quiet down my air compressor. I drew up the plans in SketchUp and built it with 2x4s, OSB, and Foamular + fiberglass insulation.

SketchUp file for download: bafflebox.skp

It is a simple design that takes in the cooler air from the lower port and exhausts it through the upper port. I had dabbled with the idea of adding a fan to each port, but found it was not needed after running it and checking the temperatures.
